Choosing a used ultrasound probe starts with two questions: what examination does your qualified operator need to perform, and which transducers does the exact ultrasound system support? A familiar connector or similar model name is not sufficient proof of compatibility.

Understand the main probe types

  • Linear array: commonly considered for superficial structures and vascular or musculoskeletal work. The appropriate frequency range and application must be checked for the specific transducer.
  • Curved or convex array: commonly considered for deeper abdominal imaging. Field of view, imaging depth and supported presets vary by model.
  • Phased array: commonly associated with cardiac imaging, with a compact footprint. Confirm that the system supports the probe and the required cardiac functions.
  • Endocavity: a specialised design with specific application, handling and reprocessing requirements. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and your facility’s requirements before purchase.

These are broad equipment categories, not a recommendation for a particular patient or procedure. Probe selection and clinical suitability must be determined by a qualified professional.

Match the full model number

Send the seller the ultrasound system’s model, installed software version and a photograph of its probe connection. Ask for the complete probe model and part number. On GE equipment, do not assume that similarly named probes such as 3S-RS and 3Sc-RS are interchangeable, or that all RS probes work on every LOGIQ e, Vivid i or Voluson system.

Inspect condition and evidence of testing

Request close photographs of the acoustic lens, housing, strain reliefs, cable and connector. Ask whether the probe has been assessed for image defects or element dropout, and what test method was used. A photograph of a powered-on scanner alone does not demonstrate probe performance. Damage, suspected electrical faults or image defects require professional evaluation.

Compare the complete purchase cost

A system-and-probe bundle may be useful if both items match your requirements. Compare the supplied probes, power supply, any required adapters and the cost of inspection or servicing. Check whether quoted probe frequencies describe the full supported range or a particular operating setting.
